I remember when Lynyrd Skynyrd (along with Labelle) opened for The Who on their '75 American tour. They did not "steal the show" from the headliners (a legend that has passed among Skynyrd fans); a friend of mine saw them in Florida and said while fans there were enthusiastic for their local heroes, people were mainly there for The Who and they got a great performance (as usual).
Actually I correct myself I believe it was their 73 tour. Their '75 tour openers were Labelle & Black Oak Arkansas, it was Skynyrd & (I think) Alex Harvey who opened for the Who on their Quadrophenia tour when they played US that year.

I was at The Forum on November 22 of that tour. Great show.
